let’s talk about opportunity cost

Defined:

The value of an opportunity that is lost or sacrificed when the choice of one course of action requires that another course of action must be given up.

I think that is the best definition I could find, since opportunity cost can certainly be measured in terms other than finances. It’s funny that the term “opportunity cost” even exists really. I mean, humans are capable of the strangest and most incredible things. Having the capability to stop and recognize beauty, the ingenuity to survive in almost all types of climates, even the ones we weren’t designed for… Yet we do the most unproductive things as well, like making ourselves physically ill over matters that have no bearing on our basic survival.

Right now, for me, for really the first time, I can do pretty much anything I want. Yup. Anything. And it’s a scary world out there, but exciting as well. It seems at every turn though, there is a cost. Something must be given up in order for something else to be obtained. Things and people, space, nature… You have to weigh it out. Really, everything you do, when you do it, it means you’re not doing something else. Sometimes you don’t even get to choose what you’re going to have to give up, but amor fati, c’est la vie, que será será, gam zu letova. Because it has to be, and it is what it is.

So, while I haven’t yet decided the next path to follow, I know I’m not going to stand still. There’s a lot to do! Oh, boy. There really is a lot.
