race for the cure

Posted: August 11th, 2009 | Author: nikki | Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Hi guys. I registered to run in the NYC Race for the Cure on September 13, in Central Park. My grandmother and aunt both had (and thankfully were able to beat) breast cancer, so I have some personal ties to this important cause.

To support me in the race by donating to Susan G. Komen For the Cure, go here: http://www.komennyc.org/goto/nikki_p . Thank you!

harvey

Last night a friend texted me on a whim, and I ended up at the last Harvey Danger show, probably possibly ever. John Hodgman introduced them, and they played for two hours and forty minutes. I am not too familiar with the music of Harvey Danger, but I really enjoyed their show. I plan to acquaint myself more with their stuff. I missed the first opener, but I liked the second one a lot… they are called Jukebox the Ghost. Their style reminded me slightly, very slightly of Ben Folds Five.

More pics at my flickr. ♥

eskimo

Someone tooootally awesome bestowed unto me the new Why? album, Eskimo Snow, this morning. I will start off saying I enjoy it very much, but it’ll take some easing into for me, learning to love it as I’ve loved their previous albums. Though the sound is still distinctly Why?, there is a marked departure from their stylings in Elephant Eyelash and Alopecia.

Yoni Wolf gives some perspective in this interview.

Lots of things have been happening lately, and I haven’t really posted about any of them. I have a new nephew (Ian Daniel), Michael Jackson has left a weirdly shaped void in all our hearts, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is getting less and less kindness from me the more I discuss it. I’ve torn through a bunch of books lately, the most notable of them being The Road my Cormac McCarthy. If it’s on your list, and it should be, read it before even watching the trailer for the upcoming film.

My summer has, unfortunately, not included big travel plans, but next weekend I will be traveling to Connecticut with one of my most favorite people ever to attend a wedding. It’s going to be so much fun!

And there you have an update. I’ll try to post more, and start carrying my camera with me again.

død snø

Død Snø or Dead Snow, a foreign film from Norway. About zombies. Zombies who were Nazis in life and still retain their loyalty to their general. Uh, somehow.

Actually, I liked it a lot. Original, yet decidedly cliché where appropriate. With a feel similar to Evil Dead 2 (some boo! ahh! moments, but not taking itself too seriously), this one entertained with suspense, gore gore gore (ew), and humor. What was unique about our viewing experience was that the director was in the audience with us, and took some questions at the end. It was interesting to hear him speak, and explain his intent for the tone of the film, which came across nicely. He also noted that American audiences laughed in different places than Norwegian audiences, partly due to some jokes being lost in translation, and a different sense of comedic timing.

If you liked Dead Alive, Evil Dead 1 or 2 or Army of Darkness, or really anything with zombies (or beings with zombie-like characteristics), and if you can read subtitles, you’ll probably like this. And… they are in talks about making a sequel.
